慶応大学などの研究チームは、ウイルスの遺伝情報を調べる『ゲノム解析』を使って、日本国内でも去年夏に、新型コロナウイルスが独自に変異していたことを突き止めました。
研究チームが解析したところ、国内の新型コロナウイルスには、2種類あることが分かりました。1つは去年の春、武漢からヨーロッパを経て入ってきた『欧米型』。もう1つは、その欧米型が日本で変異した『国内変異型』です。
去年5月ごろに発生したと推定される、この「国内変異型」には重症化しにくいという特徴がありました。
慶応大学医学部・小崎健次郎教授：「もちろん年齢や性別などによって重症化に差がありますので、その部分を考慮に入れても、変異のある人の方が重症化しにくかった」
理由は、ウイルスが体内に入った後の動きが違うためだといいます。
ウイルスが体内で増殖するためには、ヒトの細胞内で、自らの遺伝子から作られるタンパク質を解き放つ必要があります。変異型は、この解き放つ役割をするメインプロテアーゼという酵素の働きが弱いことが分かりました。
慶応大学医学部・小崎健次郎教授：「メインプロテアーゼを弱めるような薬を使えば、患者さん（の症状）が少し軽くなるかもしれないということは推論できる。強い、弱いの情報以外に、薬を作ることにも重要な情報が得られるし、そういったことを日本中の研究者が早い段階で共有できていれば、色んなことが前に進みやすいだろうという気持ちは振り返ってみてある」
