台湾の蔡英文（ツァイインウェン）総統は28日までに米CNNの単独取材に応じ、台湾軍の訓練のために米軍が駐留していることを認めた。
台湾の外交関係者によると、1979年に米国が中国と国交を結んで台湾と断交して以降、総統が米軍の駐留を公式に認めたのは初めて。
各国で広がる中国への警戒の動きを背景に、台湾の現状を改めて国際社会に周知させようとした可能性がある。蔡氏はCNN記者から駐留米軍の人数を尋ねられ、「人々が考えているほどは多くない」と答え、駐留を認めた。
CNNは米政府の資料として、2018年の10人から21年には32人に増加したと報じている。蔡氏はまた、中国との対話を望むとする一方で、中国による台湾侵攻で米軍が防衛に動くかどうかを問われた際、「米国の介入を確信している」と発言。
その理由として長年の対米関係に加え、米世論や米議会の台湾への支持を挙げた。台湾への米軍の駐留はこれまで「公然の秘密」とされ、公には語られてこなかった。
米国は中国と国交を結んだ際に、中国が台湾を自国の一部と主張するのを「認知する」と表明。
中国も05年に反国家分裂法をつくるなど、台湾独立の動きには武力行使を排除しないと宣言してきたためだ。中国外務省の汪文斌副報道局長は28日の定例会見で「米国と台湾地区のあらゆる軍事的関係に反対する。主権と領土を守る中国人民の決意と能力を見くびれば、必ずしくじることになる」と強く反発した。
台湾の外交関係者は蔡氏の今回の発言について「米側と綿密な調整を経た内容だ」と指摘する。
蔡氏は台湾の建国記念の日に当たる今月10日の演説でも、「台湾と中国は互いに隷属しない」と強調していた。
一連の言動には、中台を巡る国際情勢を踏まえ、台湾に対する日米欧のさらなる支持をめざす狙いも込められている。 -
