第22回全国高校選抜ラグビー大会（毎日新聞社後援）は最終日の31日、埼玉・熊谷ラグビー場で決勝が行われ、
東福岡が桐蔭学園（神奈川）を破り、2016年の第17回大会に続き、最多6回目の優勝を果たした。桐蔭学園を倒しての王座奪還には、特別な重みがあった。「なかなかファイナル（決勝）に届かなかったが、
やっと桐蔭にたどり着いた」。大一番を前に、東福岡を率いて9年の藤田雄一郎監督（48）がそう語ったのには
理由がある。桐蔭学園には、最近の全国大会で苦杯をなめてきた。選抜大会では第19回、20回大会と準々決勝で敗れ、
冬の全国高校大会（花園）では第98回（18年度）、99回大会（19年度）と準決勝で屈していた。
かつて一時代を築いた東福岡にとって、雪辱の思いは人一倍強かっただろう。東福岡は07年度の花園で初めて全国の頂点に立ち、これまで選抜5回、花園は6回の優勝を果たしてきた。
直近で選抜王者に輝いた第17回大会は、後に明治大で主将を務め、今春からトップリーグのサントリーで
プレーする箸本（はしもと）龍雅（22）が主将を担った。そのチームは夏の全国高校7人制大会、花園も制し、
「高校3冠」を達成した。しかし、その後は15人制のタイトルから遠のいていた。復権をかけ、司令塔を務めるSO楢本幹志朗（かんじろう、2年）は
「今のチームはマスト（必ず）で優勝しないといけない」との決意を胸に、有言実行を果たした。選手は日ごろから、全ての練習メニューがメンバー選考の一環と意識し、質の高い練習に身を投じてきた。
楢本が「甘えはない」と言えば、FWの大西一平（2年）は「チーム内でもバチバチ体を当てていく。おかげで
レベルアップできたと思う」と実感している。今大会は29日の準決勝で、第100回全国高校大会準々決勝で引き分けた長年のライバル、東海大大阪仰星に
46―17で快勝。フィジカルの強さを前面に出し、強じんな精神力で真っ向勝負を挑む原点に立ち返ったことが
奏功した。接点に強いFW、そして技術とスピードを兼ね備えたバックスの連係に自信を深め、藤田監督は
「仰星との準決勝を乗り越えられたのは大きい。選手はもっと成長できる」と語る。これで選抜決勝での
戦績は6連勝で、勝負強さも証明した。約3カ月前に花園で連覇を果たし、黄金時代を築いたかと思われた桐蔭学園の快進撃を止めた。
