店頭で見かけた謎に高額のゲーム雑誌。その理由がひと目で分かる店側の「工夫」に称賛の声が寄せられているのだ。

レコードや書籍など、店頭に並んだ中古商品の中には思わぬ「プレミアもの」が眠っているケースも。しかし中にはあまりに自然に陳列されているため、つい見逃してしまう事態も少なくない。以前ツイッター上では、高額な理由が「ひと目で分かる」中古ゲーム雑誌が話題となっていたのをご存知だろうか。
■なぜこの号だけこんなに高い？
件のゲーム雑誌が注目を集める切っ掛けとなったのは、声優・石川佳典さんが17日に投稿した一件のツイート。
投稿には中古ショップ店頭にて発見したと思しきゲーム雑誌『ゲーメスト』が写っていたのだが、元々の価格が530円であるのに対し、店側の設定価格は3,800円（税込）と、7倍以上の高値がついているのが印象的である。
この号は何かレアな特集でも組まれていたのか…？ と思わず首を捻ってしまうところだが、ツイートには「高い理由がわかりやすくて大変よろしい」と意味深な一文がつづられており、値札横に貼られた店側のメモ書きを見ると即座に納得。
そこには「インド人を右に」の7文字が記されていたのだ。
■一体、どういうことなのか？
こちらの謎すぎるフレーズを理解する前に、まずは『ゲーメスト』の詳細について解説しておきたい。
同誌は「新声社」が1986年から1999年まで発行していた「アーケードゲーム」を専門に取り扱う雑誌で、その専門性の高さと独特なノリ、テンションで大きな人気を博し、「相手の背面部位を攻撃し、ガード方向を反転させる」動作を意味する「めくり」など数多くの格闘ゲーム専門用語・俗語も同誌が発祥となっている。
そんな『ゲーメスト』は誤植が多すぎることでも有名で、本来ならば雑誌の信頼性に関わる事態のはずなのだが、なぜこのような誤植が生まれたのか読者の理解を大きく超えているうえ、声に出して読みたいフレーズが多いことで、逆に「誤植あってこそのゲーメスト」といっても過言ではないほどの魅力を放っていたのだ。
いくつか例を挙げると「レバー＋大パンチ」と表記するところを「レバー＋大ピンチ」としてしまったり、格闘ゲームの金字塔『ストリートファイター』シリーズのキャラクターであるザンギエフの技解説で「ザンギエフ」「スーパーラリアット」となるべき箇所が「ザンギュラ」「スーパーウリアッ上」になっていたりと、とにかく尖りまくった誤植が多数。
中でも前述の「ザンギュラのスーパーウリアッ上」と並んで人気の高いものが、レースゲーム『スカッドレース』の記事に登場する誤植で、こちらでは「ハンドルを右に」と表現すべき箇所を「インド人を右に」と印字してしまっている。
手書き原稿における「ハンドル」の文字があまりに汚く「インド人」と誤解された物が印刷、発行され世に放たれたワケだが、「くお～！！ ぶつかる～！！ ここでアクセル全開、インド人を右に！」という、一種の爽快感すら覚える意味不明な誤植とその勢いは、多くのゲーマーたちのハートを今なお掴んで離さないのだ。
そうした背景もあって「伝説の誤植掲載号」に関する石川さんのツイートは、投稿からわずか数日で1.3万件以上ものRTを記録。他のツイッターユーザーからは「往年のゲーマーにこそ分かるネタ…！」「こ、これが伝説の…！」「納得のこの価格」「あの伝説の誤植が見られるなら、安いもんだな」といった反響の声が多数寄せられている。
果たして店頭雑誌に貼られていたメモ書きには、どのような意味が込められているのか？ そして『ゲーメスト』の誤植は現代の格ゲーマーたちにどのような影響を与えているのか？
その謎を解明すべく、石川さんが件の『ゲーメスト』を発見したショップ「駿河屋」店舗および、運営会社「エーツー」、そしてザンギを愛してやまない強豪ゲーマーに話を聞いたところ、数々の事実が明らかになったのだ。
