ロシア軍がウクライナに侵攻し、各地で激しい戦闘が繰り広げられている。緊迫した状況の中、故郷から遠く離れた日本に滞在しているウクライナ人、ロシア人たちを取材した。その誰もが武力侵攻は望んでいなかった。その一方で、西側諸国の論理では説明できない、この“戦争”の複雑な背景が見えてきた。

「私のパパはウクライナ人、ママはロシア人です。だから、親戚はウクライナにも、ロシアにもいっぱいいます。私の名前は、パパの名前からウクライナの名前がついています。だけど、国籍はロシア。私はロシア、ウクライナの両方の味方なんです」
赤い爪、くりっとした目でこちらを見つめながら話した。日本から直行便で2時間45分とアクセスもよく、日本人にも馴染みの深いハバロフスク出身のロシア人女性（38）だ。その潤んだ瞳は複雑な心境をよく表していた。
ロシアは24日、ウクライナに侵攻。翌25日には、ロシアの国防相がウクライナ軍の200人以上を殺害し、空港を制圧したと発表した。「ショックです。みんな信じられなかった。戦争にはならないと思っていたから。政治と一般の市民とは別です。戦争が早く終って欲しいと祈っています」
ロシア軍は、ウクライナの市民や民間施設は攻撃しない、あくまで標的はウクライナ国内の軍事施設と説明した。
「その言葉を信じています」
だが、ウクライナ内務省によれば、ロシア軍はウクライナにある33の民間施設も爆撃し、2人の子どもが死亡したという。
「それはロシアのせいじゃない」
ロシアのプーチン大統領がウクライナ侵攻に踏み切った理由を、彼女なりに解釈して、こう表現した。
「アメリカやヨーロッパが、お金をウクライナの玄関にわざといっぱい置いて、ウクライナとロシアの兄弟の国同士を喧嘩させようとあおっている」
プーチン大統領は2月22日、「ルガンスク人民共和国」と「ドネツク人民共和国」の独立を承認。この2つの地域はドンバス地域と呼ばれるが、ドンバスの平和を維持するためにロシア軍をウクライナに派遣すると表明したのだ。
